Practice Areas & Cases Commonly Handled in Appleton

The attorneys at our Appleton office handle a full range of cases, including in family law, divorce, criminal law, DUI/OWI, immigration, bankruptcy, and personal injury.

Divorce and immigration cases are perhaps the cases we handle most often at our Appleton office.  Below is some info that may be helpful if you have a divorce or immigration case.

Getting a Divorce in Appleton, WI: a Few Points to Know

  • Appleton is part of the Outagamie County family court system. Divorce cases are overseen by the Outagamie Circuit Judge at 320 S. Walnut Street, in Appleton. The Family Court Commissioner is located at the same address.
  • The Outagamie County Family Court Services offers some programs that may be of use in your divorce.
  • During your divorce you might have to undergo mediation. Mediation is $100 if ordered  by a court. You may also have to get an in-depth family assessment if you and your spouse are fighting over custody. Usually the judge orders those, and Family Court Services charges $350 per parent.
  • In high-conflict cases you may be assigned a parenting coordinator, or PC. PCs settle issues like visitation schedules, school placement, transportation issues, medical decisions, or other non-custody disputes through legally binding arbitration with the parents. That service costs each parent $500.
  • Family Court Services offers a “Positive Co-Parenting” orientation (just $10), which is an educational seminar meant to help both parents maintain a relationship with their children.
  • The family court website provides some limited instructions on how to file a divorce case, and touts volunteers who are willing to provide help to pro se divorcees. Pro se is a risky way to try to get a divorce. Divorces have lifelong financial consequences, as well as consequences for your relationship with your children.
  • Even if you don’t choose an attorney from our firm, we urge you to hire an attorney who is sufficiently motivated to put in the work required to understand your needs and help you do what’s best for your family.

Immigrating to Appleton, WI: a Few Points to Know

Like many cities, Appleton can be a challenging place to immigrate to if you don’t have proper legal representation. You face a much higher chance of deportation. Yet the Appleton area relies on immigrants to keep the economy productive. Local dairy farms are particularly dependent on the work of immigrants.

Amaro Lopez, one of our immigration attorneys, is an immigrant himself. Catholic Charities of Green Bay maintains an Appleton office, and St. Therese Church is heavily involved in providing legal aid to immigrants who can’t pay for it. Amaro volunteers at St. Therese once a month.

Immigration cases get complex quickly. If possible, getting help from a full-time immigration attorney is the best way to meet your goals.

Beyond Expectations

My husband had never been in any legal trouble before and we didn’t know what to do or what the process was. Attorney Kaehne was very upfront and willing to explain every step of the way. My husband can be very skeptical when it comes to trusting people with his best interest, but Attorney Kaehne always remained professional and helpful. My husband was facing the possibility of years in prison and Attorney Kaehne was able to get the matter dismissed. He will always be our first choice!
