What is naturalization?

Naturalization is the legal process of becoming a United States Citizen.  In order to be eligible to apply for naturalization you must have been:

  • A lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for a minimum of 5 years; or
  • A lawful permanent resident for at least 3 years if you obtained your green card through a United States citizen spouse AND have been living with that spouse for the last 3 years, or
  • A lawful permanent resident for at least 3 years if you obtained your green card through the Violence Against Women Act; or
  • A qualifying service member in the United States armed forces and you meet all other eligibility requirements.

How do you become a naturalized US citizen?

If you meet one of the above-listed qualifications, you may be able to become a United States citizen; however, you must be able to show that all of the following are true:

  • You are at least 18 years old;
  • You have been physically present in the United States for at least 2.5 years out of the 5 years before applying;
  • You have lived in the state or USCIS district that you will be applying in for at least 3 months before filling;
  • You have demonstrated good moral character for the 5 years before filing; and
  • You can read, write, and speak English and you understand United States history and government (unless you fit into several exemption categories).

Why become a naturalized US citizen?

There are several benefits to becoming a United States citizen.  Once naturalized, you can obtain a United States passport and will be eligible to vote.  Should you come into contact with the criminal justice system, you no longer have to fear removal (formerly known as deportation).

Our naturalization attorneys can help

The naturalization process is the final step in becoming a United States citizen and an experienced immigration attorney can help you through this exciting and stressful process.  An attorney can assist you in preparing the naturalization application, obtain all required documentation, study for the history and civics exam, and accompany you to your naturalization interview.  It is even more critical that you seek the assistance of an immigration attorney if you have trouble with the English language, lack documentation, have a prior criminal arrest or conviction, or have problems with the marriage through which your green card was obtained.  These are some potential issues that may arise during the naturalization process and interview and it is extremely important that you are able to defend against any thing that may get in your way of becoming a United States citizen.

Beyond Expectations

My husband had never been in any legal trouble before and we didn’t know what to do or what the process was. Attorney Kaehne was very upfront and willing to explain every step of the way. My husband can be very skeptical when it comes to trusting people with his best interest, but Attorney Kaehne always remained professional and helpful. My husband was facing the possibility of years in prison and Attorney Kaehne was able to get the matter dismissed. He will always be our first choice!
